Overview

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Senior Nutrition Laboratory Manager for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Coordinates research projects related to nutritional intake and physiological or biochemically-related responses.
  • Manages the conduct of funded internal and external research projects and trials.
  • Implements study participant and fiscal tracking.
  • Tracks project tasks to ensure timely completion of milestones, ensuring quality control of deliverables.
  • First point of contact for communications with stakeholders, research partners, and junior researchers.
  • Plans meetings with research partners and directs follow-up on action items identified at meetings.
  • Monitors of consultant agreements and Non-Disclosure Agreements.
  • Identifies potential funding mechanisms to align obesity treatment using a range of interventions (from lifestyle, to pharmacotherapy to surgical) with inflammatory, body composition and cognitive outcomes.
  • Writes institutional review board protocol, consent and other materials for eIRB submission, and adhere to government clinical trial registration and other activities related to transparency of the research.
  • Works to help submit new and related proposals for the development of grant applications, that can include formatting bio sketches to meet funding agency guidelines, formatting the application with references and independently follow up on details while maintaining close communication with the PI.
  • Works with the Pl supporting logistical management of funded research.
  • Manages clinical intervention study team staff including hiring and communication with study participants.
  • Recruits into studies (flyers, advertisements electronically and use of recruitment service subscriptions).
  • Independently reviews and summarizes participant data profiles- identifying points of quality improvement leverage and research opportunities.
  • Develops specific literature reviews using tables and data summaries.
  • Wets laboratory management and assays, instrument repairs, surplus pickups, REHS related inspection needs.
  • Independently monitors, interprets and tracks data use agreements requirements, submissions, and updates, including database development and reporting.
  • Good at problem solving related to wet and clinical lab management.
  • Mentors undergraduate and new graduate students in the laboratory (wet lab and clinical activities).
  • Counsels human subjects on diet related information and willing to educate hired dietitians how to conduct nutrition education/behavior modification research classes and clinical nutrition measurements at each visit.
  • Develops and implements data collection protocols, mentorship evaluations, needs assessments, etc. in collaboration with the research team
  • Other research activities as assigned.
  • Identifies potential research partners for current and future projects.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Doctoral (PhD) degree with focus on nutrition and medical sciences with evidence of managerial experience.
  • At least two years of experience.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong clinical and biochemistry research background.
  • Be familiar with at least 1-2 nutrient analysis programs (i.e., ASA24).
  • Knowledge of managing a wet lab, clinical trials, and x-ray instruments.
  • Must have basic statistical knowledge (SPSS, SAS or R) or similar programs.
  • Excellent organizational skills required for maintaining quarterly and biannual reports.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, be familiar with EndNote and Calendar (e.g., Outlook, Google).
  • Detail oriented with an entrepreneurial approach for purchases in the lab and initiating new projects.
  • Possesses strong skills in written and verbal communication.
  • Must be efficient, flexible and demonstrate evidence of productivity.
